The following is one way to memorize the Word of God.

1. Decide what you would like to memorize: a verse, a short passage, a chapter, or even a book.

2. Having decided what you want to memorize, write the verses down on index cards, one verse per card, with the Reference (and the topic, if you use one) at the top of the card.

3. Read the first verse out loud two or three times. Get it into your head, and become familiar with how the whole verse sounds.

4. Now, say the Reference, the first phrase of the verse, and the Reference again. Be sure that you say the phrase correctly before moving on to the next phrase.

   For example, if you're memorizing the book of Colossians, you would say:

   Colossians 1:1
   "Paul, an apostle of Christ..."
   Colossians 1:1

   Once you have the first phrase memorized, add the second:

   Colossians 1:1
   "Paul, an apostle of Christ..."
   Colossians 1:1

   Colossians 1:1
   "Paul, an apostle of Christ by the will of God..."
   Colossians 1:1

   And so on, until the entire verse is memorized.

   The reason you want to say the Reference at the beginning and end each time is so that it, too, will become a part of your memory. That way, you'll not only be able to quote the verse, but when someone asks you where it is found in the Bible, you'll be able to tell them, or you'll be able to look it up quickly when you want to show it to someone.

5. If you are memorizing a number of verses on a specific topic, then you'll want to add the topic at the beginning. For example:

   God's Provision
   Philippians 4:19
   "My God shall supply..."
   Philippians 4:19

6. After you've completed memorizing the verse, you'll want to spend the next few days (maybe up to a month) in reviewing it. Memorizing it is easy. Remembering it a month or a year later is not so easy. Carry your cards with you, and work on them as you walk, wait in line, sit at a table when you're alone, and without looking at the card, work on your verses as you drive.
